WinterICE your home

Fall is here and winter is just around the corner. Time has come to tidy things around the home and garden. So much to do and little time to do it in. I like to start on the outside in case a cold wave comes i'm cozy indoors.

Ladies print this honey-do-list to delegate the work.

1. drain water spigot (put hose away).
2. drain (blow out) sprinkler system.
3. clean out gutters and check downspouts are secure.
4. cover lawn furniture, BBQ and condenser c/a units.
5. remove any loose items such as toys that may become projectiles in a windstorm.
6. place mulch in bushes to protect from freezing.
7. remove or cover birdbaths.
8. fertilize the lawn for winter.
9. replace outdoor lightbulbs to secure dark areas.
10. check areas where wiring, pipes, windows and doors may have openings and cold air may penetrate. seal with caulk or expanding foam .

The roof should be checked by a pro, but if you have a spot where it seems to leak once in a while I would place roof tar over the spot.

Inside the home.

1. Check all doors and windows for draft.
2. drain water heater until rust is removed from bottom.
3. turn on boiler. check to make sure it turns on and that all the gauges indicate proper working levels. furnace filters replaced and thermostats switched from c/a to heat.
4. check the smoke detectors and replace batteries. Home fires happen often in the winter due to electric heaters and candles. Install a carbon monoxide alarm .
5. store 1 gallon of water per family member in a cool location.
6. purchase batteries and make sure to have a few flashlights in accessible locations in case of a energy outage.
7. Everyone in the household must know where the main water shutoff, gas shutoff, electrical main panel breakers are located and be able to shutoff in case of an emergency.

Now reach in the fridge get a cold brew and enjoy the game.
